Welcome to Casa Tortuga de Oro (Golden Turtle House), a very special place for people who like the raw beauty of the ocean combined with the vibrant energies of the tropical rain forest. With the tumble of the Pacific’s emerald waves right at your doorstep, the opportunity couldn’t be better for enjoying some of the most enchanting surroundings this planet has to offer.
The owner Tim Cowman did not arrive at this location by some happy accident. He had invested thirty years of his life in travel and, after investigating forty-three different countries, he settled on this small corner of Costa Rica as the loveliest and most welcoming place in the world. Most people agree with his choice.
Located right on the low cliffs overlooking Backwash Bay near the tip of the pristine Osa Peninsula, this secluded getaway for a couple, group of friends or family will help create indelible memories of tropical fun. Right in front of the spacious house is a limited access private beach and fishing spot amid beautiful lava rock formations. The surfing of Backwash Bay is literally in your front yard, while it’s wide sandy beach – ideal for sunbathing – is only steps away. There are lots of tide pools to explore, and the sound of the sea always accompanies your activities. The monkeys, coatis, scarlet macaws, iguanas and other rain forest natives will be the only other creatures sharing your little slice of paradise.
The Golden Turtle House is a unique structure, built in 1996 from finished native hardwoods, sanded and oiled to bring out the natural lines and textures. You will have the run of two spacious stories with two full baths, a complete kitchen with refrigerator and plenty of dishes, and a wraparound porch with outside shower on the first level, and a hardwood verandah with deck furniture on the second level. It can sleep up to eight comfortably, and the sleeping rooms are fully screened on both floors. Quiet energy is provided by modern solar panels, so you will not need to do without the standard amenities of home.
For those who bore easily of lounging in hammocks and spying on the hordes of monkeys cavorting in the trees, there are many activities to enjoy in the area. Bird watching, fishing, diving and surfing are all available at close range – without even having to leave the property! In addition, there is a full range of tours that can be arranged, from offshore sport fishing to ocean kayaking to waterfall rappelling. The excitement never ends . . . .
Guests pay $95 double per day ($30 per additional adult, and $20 per child 8-12, under 8 free) for a minimum two night stay. The rates are kept low intentionally, but always
suffice to maintain the house and grounds, and provide a modest living to Elsi and Franklin, your friendly Tico caretakers, who provide not only care and attention to guests’ needs, but 24-hour security as well. Tim has found that by giving people something better than they expected, they express their appreciation by leaving the place better than they found it.
Aren't people funny that way?
We look forward to helping you enjoy your Costa Rican vacation.
